Wheel Alignment vs Wheel Balancing: What's the Difference?

Alignment and balancing are often confused — but they're completely different services that address different problems. Here's a clear explanation of both.

Wheel alignment and wheel balancing are two of the most commonly confused tyre services, but they address completely different problems. Understanding the difference helps you communicate more effectively with tyre technicians and makes sure you're booking the right service for the right symptoms.

Wheel alignment (also called tracking) refers to the angle at which your tyres make contact with the road. If your wheels are misaligned — pointing inward (toe-in) or outward (toe-out) relative to each other or the vehicle's centreline — your tyres will scrub against the road at an angle, causing rapid and uneven tread wear. The car may also pull to one side. Alignment is adjusted by changing the angle of the suspension components, not the wheel itself.

Wheel balancing, on the other hand, addresses the weight distribution of each individual tyre and wheel assembly. A slight imbalance causes the wheel to wobble or hop as it spins, creating vibration that you'll feel through the steering wheel and seat, especially at motorway speeds. Balancing is corrected by attaching small calibrated weights to the rim.

You need alignment if your car pulls to one side, you notice faster or uneven tyre wear, or after significant suspension work or a major pothole impact. You need balancing if you feel vibration at speed. Many cases require both. Trident Mobile Tyres can handle balancing on-site and will advise you honestly if your vehicle also needs a wheel alignment at a specialist centre.
