Tyre safety is not just about passing your MOT — it's about staying in control in an emergency. Given that tyres are the only part of your vehicle that touches the road, their condition directly affects braking, steering and stability in every driving situation.
Check your tread depth monthly using the 20p coin test. The legal minimum is 1.6mm, but safety experts recommend replacing at 3mm. Check tyre pressure at least once a month and before any long journey — this takes just a few minutes and significantly affects handling, fuel economy and wear rate.
Always inspect tyres visually for cracks, bulges or embedded objects. A nail or screw embedded in the tread may not immediately deflate the tyre but will eventually cause a slow puncture — often at the worst possible moment. If you notice your car pulling to one side, your steering wheel vibrating, or unusual road noise, have your tyres and wheel alignment checked immediately.
Never mix tyre types across the same axle — mixing radial and cross-ply tyres, or summer and winter tyres, creates dangerous handling imbalances. Finally, remember that age matters too. Even if a tyre looks fine, rubber compounds degrade over time. Any tyre over 5 years old should be inspected professionally; most manufacturers recommend replacement after 10 years regardless of appearance.
