How to Spot a Dangerous Tyre Before It Fails
Many tyre failures are preventable. Knowing what to look for during a simple visual check could save your life — and your wallet.
Most catastrophic tyre failures don't happen without warning — the warning signs are simply missed. A regular two-minute visual inspection of your tyres, carried out every time you wash your car or fill up with fuel, can identify problems before they become dangerous.
Look for sidewall bulges or lumps — these indicate internal structural damage, typically from pothole impacts, and represent an imminent blowout risk. Any tyre with a bulge should be replaced immediately, as the weakened sidewall can fail without notice, particularly at speed.
Inspect the tread for cuts, slashes or embedded objects. A nail or screw in the tread is a slow puncture waiting to happen. Check for cracking or crazing of the rubber, particularly on the sidewalls — this is a sign of ageing and UV degradation, common on tyres more than 5 years old that may look fine on the surface.
Pay attention to your car's behaviour too. A consistent pull to one side suggests uneven tyre pressures or possible internal damage. Vibration through the steering wheel points to wheel imbalance or, in more serious cases, a belt separation inside the tyre. If in doubt, have a professional inspect your tyres — Trident Mobile Tyres offers free tyre safety checks with every callout.
