Seasonal Tyre Swaps: When and Why to Switch Your Tyres
Running the right tyre for the right season improves safety, performance and tyre longevity. Here's the complete UK guide to seasonal tyre swapping.
In much of continental Europe, seasonal tyre swaps are a legal requirement. While UK law doesn't mandate them, the safety case for switching between summer and winter tyres — or having your all-season tyres checked — is compelling, especially for drivers in colder, more elevated or rural parts of the country.
The general guidance is to fit winter or all-season tyres when temperatures consistently drop below 7°C — typically from October onwards in the UK. Summer tyres begin to lose performance below this threshold as their rubber compounds harden. Conversely, winter tyres perform less well in warm conditions, so swapping back to summer tyres in late March or April makes sound safety and economic sense.
From a cost perspective, running two sets of tyres means each set experiences half the annual wear, potentially extending the life of both sets and offsetting the investment in a second set. Many drivers keep their original wheels for the winter set and buy a second set of budget steel wheels, reducing the changeover cost to just the fitting fee.
Trident Mobile Tyres makes seasonal swaps effortless — we come to you, swap all four tyres, balance and torque them correctly, and can store your seasonal set if needed. Book your autumn changeover in September to avoid the October rush when demand peaks.
